In our design, we intended to replace the cells by utilizing these boundaries, breaking, dismantling, restructuring, re-integrating the original units to combine with new distinguish features.
Sansuo Prison, which covers an area of 18.75ha and with approximately 29,730 sqm construction areas, is located at the west of Yanlong Avenue, at the edge of Universidad New Town, Longgang, Shenzhen.
Due to Sansuo’s particular property and architectural type, our design oriented at take advantage of its original function to transfer into a new visual and experiential place. In phase1, we inject urban farmland to form an innovative and sustainable piece of land, while in phase 2, communities for Ant Tribe, elderly, commercial and sports facilities, are introduced to make a unique creative Sansuo community.
As we know, jail’s architectural characteristics are consistent with it’s functions, which means there are obvious inside and outside, up and down, monitoring and surveillance ideological and spatial boundaries. In our design, we intended to replace the cells by utilizing these boundaries, breaking, dismantling, restructuring, re-integrating the original units to combine with new distinguish features, such as hotels, library, cinema, fitness, etc, through these methods, we finally achieve a special experiential museum which is similar but distinct from former Sansuo. At the same time, the complement of a variety of interactive community functions together with experiential museum can better improve the whole area.
